Civil Rights Organizations

 

Many organizations fight for the civil rights of people in the United States. Here are some civil rights organizations that deal with discrimination based on race, gender, ethnic background and disability. Some of these sites deal specifically with disability issues.

Hawai`i Ombudsman
Hawai`i Ombudsman is an agency that investigates the complaints of individuals who have had their civil rights violated. This site also shows you how to file a complaint.

Hawai`i Civil Rights Commission
The Hawai`i Civil Rights Commission helps people who face discrimination. Its goals are to protect an individual's civil rights and promote diversity.

Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action Office at the University of Hawai`i

Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund
The Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund is an organization that is dedicated to protecting and advancing the civil rights of individuals with disabilities.

The Council for Disability Rights
The Council for Disability Rights works to advance the rights of people with disabilities. It believes in promotes independent living. It also works towards removing the barriers for disabled persons to allow them to participate in their communities.

Disability Rights Advocates
The Disability Rights Advocates is an organization that works to ensure dignity, equality, and opportunity for all people with disabilities.

American Council of the Blind
The American Council of the Blind works towards improving opportunities in all areas of life for individuals who are blind.

National Association for Rights Protection and Advocacy
The National Association for Rights Protection and Advocacy is an organization that exists to protect the rights of those in mental institutions.

National Association of People with AIDS
The National Association of People with AIDS advocates on behalf of people with HIV and AIDS.

National Federation of the Blind
The National Federation of the Blind is a consumer and advocacy organization that promotes the well-being of people who are blind. It educates the public about blindness and provides information and referral services. They also have information about scholarships, adaptive equipment, protection of civil rights, and other support services for people who are blind and their families.

National Association of the Deaf
The National Association of the Deaf provides education and advocacy for people who are deaf.

American Association of People with Disabilities
The American Association of People with Disabilities works toward ensuring self-sufficiency and political empowerment for Americans with disabilities.

TASH
TASH is an organization that works towards equal opportunity, and inclusion of people with disabilities.

United Cerebral Palsy
United Cerebral Palsy is a leading source of information on cerebral palsy. It also advocates for the rights of people with any disability.

The Arc
The Arc is an organization for people with mental retardation or other developmental disabilities. It works to improve supports and services and to include all children and adults with disabilities in the community.

National Association of Protection and Advocacy Systems
The NAPAS helps people with disabilities become self-determined and fight for equal opportunity.
