Training Series for December 2011

December 4, 2011 (Saturday) will be “Basics”, a newly developed workshop which reviews dementia, the symptoms, misconceptions and potential treatments. The presentation includes short videos of persons with the disease, family members of persons with dementia and various professionals. After the presentation, the Alzheimer’s Association will show a video called “Complaints of a Dutiful Daughter”.
December 11, 2011 (Saturday) will be “Legal Aspects in Dementia”. This workshop covers information on advance directives, various legal documents and planning strategies. After the presentation, the Alzheimer’s Association will show a video called “Iris”.
December 18, 2011 (Saturday) will be “Challenging Behaviors in Dementia”. This workshop covers information on possible causes and types of behaviors that may arise during the course of dementia as well as potential interventions. After the presentation, the Alzheimer’s Association will show a video called “Away From Her”.
Hilo Program Coordinator, Chris Ridley, will be providing all three workshops and videos and will be available for discussion and questions.

On May 7, 2010, The Hawaii County Office of Aging proudly announced the selection of Victor E. Beardsley of Pahoa, and Dawn S. Pung of Hilo as the Outstanding Older Americans for 2010. The annual awards luncheon was held at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Hotel and attended by 400 energetic seniors. Mayor Billy Kenoi thanked the 24 nominees for making the Big Island a special place for all of us living today, and a better place to live tomorrow.
